Recently the show decided to drift off book, so even diehard fans of the novels do not know what comes next. The show caused quite the contrary when they turned Jaime Lannister into a rapist. The character had his way with twin sister right in front of their son Joffrey's dead body. The way the show’s cast and crew have handled the controversy have cause a small number of fans to abandon the series, this one included.
The official plot synopsis for tonight's all new episode, titled “ First of His Name,”
“Jon starts a new mission; Cersei and Tywin consider the next move for the Crown; Daenerys makes plans for the future.”
IT looks like winter has finally come for fans of the Game of Thrones novels. The show has decided to venture off book future than it ever has before. Not only is the story starting to drift in a different direction, but managed to ruin Jaime Lannister’s character by having him rape his sister.
Jaime strayed off of his redemptive path only to have a heroic light shined back on him in the following episode. What makes the controversial scene even worse was the way the cast and crew handled the situation.
Alex Graves, the director of the episode, downplay the horrific act by offering Vulture one of the worst defenses for rape ever uttered:
“The consensual part of it was that she wraps her legs around him, and she’s holding on to the table, clearly not to escape but to get some grounding in what’s going on. And also, the other thing that I think is clear before they hit the ground is she starts to make out with him. The big things to us that were so important, and that hopefully were not missed, is that before he rips her undergarment, she’s way into kissing him back. She’s kissing him aplenty.”
Graves must have a twisted view of consent and a distorted view of the scene, because in the episode she in no way consents. In fact she is pushing him away and telling him to stop. True she kisses him a couple of times in the scene, her outspoken objections make it clear that she was not consenting.
Graves also managed to contradict himself, admitting to The Hollywood Reporter:
“Then Jaime comes in and he rapes her. “
Considering the way that the show has mistreated the character, many viewers have decided to boycott the show. However, not enough to hurt the ratings. Game of Thrones airs tonight at 9:00 on HBO.
