Thursday Night's hockey game in Boston was a tough loss for the Bruins, losing 4-3 in Game 1 of their playoff series against hated rivals the Montreal Canadiens. But Boston fans crossed the line when many started tweeting horribly racist comments directed at Montreal's P.K. Subban, who is African-American. Looks like a play right out of the old Donald Sterling playbook.
Subban scored the winning goal in second overtime and, immediately, Twitter was flooded with comments bemoaning the Montreal defenseman, aiming shocking racial slurs at him. Even worse, one word was used so extensively by Boston area fans that the word was trending in the aftermath of the game.
Bleacher Report added that Bruins president Cam Neely and several Boston players have strongly denounced the Tweets, saying:
"The racist, classless views expressed by an ignorant group of individuals following Thursday's game via digital media are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization."
This news comes mere days after Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was exposed for making several racist comments to his mistress, comments that were recorded and leaked to TMZ.
Bruins fans in the east, Donald Sterling in the west. The world of professional sports is brewing with racial turmoil perhaps not seen since the days of Hank Aaron.
What do you think? Should more serious action be taken? Is racism being quietly accepted in pro sports and social media? Have you ever tweeted something in such poor taste you regretted later?
