Sad news for cello fans, and just fans of Julian Lloyd Webber, of whom there are many. The cellist and tireless advocate for musical outreach has announced that he is to give up playing the cello.
It is an enforced but seemingly permanent break due, says Lloyd Webber in a statement, to a herniated disc in his neck which has effected the power in his right arm. "I have no intention of enduring the restroom, though," he says, "I would like to use the knowledge I have gained through my life as a musician and an educator to give back as much as I can to the music profession which has given me so much over the years."
From that, Lloyd Webber sounds likely to increase his role leading the sistema-inspired In Harmony. But he is an immensely musical artist and it would be a shame if indeed this was the end of his performing career in some capacity or other (conducting would usually be the expected option, but if he has arm problems...).
Whichever path he chooses, one thing is certain. He will bring to it his signature tireless energy and commitment. And his unfailingly musical instincts.
Lloyd Webber's last concert as a cellist will be on May 2, with the English Chamber Orchestra in Malvern, UK.
