Last week X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer was accused of the 1999 rape of Michael Egan. Egan has filed a lawsuit against the openly gay director/producer, and three other high profile Hollywood executives for an alleged teen sex scandal. Now Singer has official dropped out of X-Men promotion. This echoes a move made by Elmo actor/puppeteer, Kevin Clash when he was accused of having sex with underage men. The charges against Clash have since been dropped.
Bryan Singer has dropped out of X-Men: Days of Future Past promotion amid allegations and rape by Michael Egan. The 31-year-old, Egan, claims that Singer forced him to do cocaine and have sex with him back when 17. Singer denies the allegations but has still stepped down from X-Men press tour, releasing a statement:
"I do not want these fictitious claims to divert ANY attention from X-Men: Days of Future Past. This fantastic film is a labour of love and one of the greatest experiences of my career. So, out of respect to all of the extraordinary contributions from the incredibly talented actors and crew involved, I've decided not to participate in the upcoming media events for the film. However, I promise when this situation is over, the facts will show this to be the sick twisted shakedown it is. I want to thank fans, friends and family for all their amazing and overwhelming support."
This is very similar to a statement, Elmo voice actor and puppeteer, Kevin Clash made it he was accused of child sex abuse. Clash stepped down from his role as the iconic childrens character, stating:
"I have loved every day of my 28 years working for this exceptional organization. Personal matters have diverted attention away from the important work 'Sesame Street' is doing and I cannot allow it to go on any longer."
The charges were later dropped after a judge determined that the NY statute of limitations had expired. An appeals court has recently upheld the ruling.
