Lincoln Center to Welcome The Opera 'Wozzeck' Performed by The Philharmonia Orchestra

Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen will take on a unique challenge as he will control the Philharmonia Orchestra in the staging of an opera where they will provide the musical back drop at the Avery Fisher Hall in the Lincoln Center on Nov. 19.

Berg's "Wozzeck ," will be the piece Salonen and crew will be working on with a raft of members joining them.

Firstly will be the Fin will be aidied by assistant conductor Aidan Oliver. Musically supporting the orchestra and conductors will be the Westminster Choir, The American Boychoir and Members of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra with a role of music director for Fernando Malvar-Ruiz.

In the opera section of this event the actors are headed up by Simon Keenlyside who will play "Wozzeck." Angela Denoke will play "Marie," the role of "Drum Major," will fall to Hubert Francis while Joshua Ellicott was given the part of "Andres."

The "Captain," is charged to Peter Hoare and Tijl Faveyts will play as the "Doctor." Henry Waddington is "First Apprentice," while "Second Apprentice," was given to Eddie Wade. Harry Nicoll is the "Idiot" and Anna Burford will play as "Margret."

The directors of this opera are Joe Miller and David Milnes.

Austrian composer Alban Berg worked on "Wozzeck, between 1914 and 1922 with the opera making its debut in 1925. Berg's "Wozzeck," is based on the drama "Woyzeck," by German playwright Georg Buchner.

Berg took Buchner's work which was fragmented and selected sections of it to create his own piece. "Wozzeck," opening scene begins with the "Captain," getting his head shaved from the aforementioned. "Wozzeck," while doing his task is being mocked from the man in rank for having a child without the blessings of the church, in reply "Wozzeck," says to him the bibical quote "Suffer the little children to come onto me," from Mark 10: 14.
