Recently the lead singer of the Christian-Rock group Jars of Clay, Dan Haseltine, spoke out in defense of gay marriage. This has caused yet another divide in the Christian community. One blogger recently attacked Haseltine’s tolerance by comparing gay marriage to Game of Thrones-esque incest.
Author and blogger,MICHAEL BROWN recently addressed Haseltine’s comments in a Charisma News post, titled “The Shattering of Jars of Clay." In the post Brown propagated the age old slippery slope argument, writing:
“This is the day of full-blown incestuous relationships on popular TV shows like Game of Thrones; of other shows glorifying polyamory (married and dating!), polygamy (from Big Love to Sister Wives to My Five Wives), and teen pregnancy; of news reports about the “wedding” of three lesbians. It is the day of almost half of all first-time American mothers having their babies out of wedlock, with cohabitation rates up more than 700% since 1960, and it is against this backdrop that talk of same-sex “marriage” has become prominent.”
However, Brown seemingly forgot that the Bible is full of incestuous heroes. Not only did Adam and Eve’s children have to get it on with each other in order to populate the world, but severl other families in the Bible were “really close.” Father Abraham had many sons, and he also had a sister-wife [Sara] of his own. Lot survived the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah only to get passed out drunk and father some children with his daughters.
Granted these actions are not explicitly condoned in the scripture the point is that you don’t have to have HBO to be exposed to examples of immoral living. The Bible is full of murder, sex, polygamy, rape and incest. Often times the people who commit these sins are not punished for their actions.
The thought that gay marriage will lead to incest, polygamy, or bestiality is just plain ignorant. There is no rational thought or any shred of evidence that having the state recognize gay marriage will send us down the so called “slippery slope.” To compare gay marriage to any of these sins is a shameful scare tactic.
