‘Man of Steel 2:’ Why Zack Snyder is Wrong About Superman

Recently Zack Snyder opened up to the Forbes about the problems that people had his movie the Man of Steel. However, Zack Snyder was wrong about Superman and we are here to tell you exactly why.

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder recently sat down with Forbes, where he shared his thoughts about the movie:

“The thing I was surprised about in response to Superman was how everyone clings to the Christopher Reeve version of Superman. How tightly they cling to those ideas, not really the comic book version, but more the movie version. … If you really analyze the comic book version of Superman, he’s killed, he’s done all the things. I guess the rules that people associate with Superman in the movie world are not the rules that really apply to him in the comic book world because those rules are different. He’s done all the things and more that we’ve shown him doing, right?”

Snyder went on to compare the Man of Steel to his other comic book film, Watchmen:

“It’s just funny to see people really taking it personally … because I made (Superman) real, you know, I made him feel or made consequences (in) the world. I felt like, it was the same thing in ‘Watchmen.’ We really wanted to show it wasn’t just like they thought, like the PG-13 version where everyone just gets up and they’re fine. I really wanted to show the violence is real, people get killed or get hurt and it’s not fun or funny.”

Here is where Snyder got it wrong. The issues isn’t that people are clingy too tightly to the Christopher Reeve version of the film, and the issue that we do not have an idea of who Superman is in the comics. The issues isn’t even so much that he made Superman a killer, but it is how he did it.

True in the comics Superman has killed, but only a last ditch resort after the fate of the entire world was in eminent danger. The family that Zod was threatening at the end of MOS could have easily been pulled from his path. True Zod needed to be stopped, but there were other paths to choose without jumping straight to killing him.

Instead, Superman took the easy and cowardly way out. Superman is Superman because he finds a way to do the impossible. He doesn’t just snap necks for shock value.

The Superman needed to kill to justify his aversion to killing is the worse cop out ever given ever. You do not need to kill to know that killing is wrong.

However, being a killer isn’t Snyder's Supermans worse sin, it was making him a coward. Superman is selfless. The Superman we know and love would not let his father die just to save his identity. He wouldn’t fear what the world would do when they found out that he existed. He wouldn’t wait 33-years to start saving lives. Yes, we know that saved a fist full of people whenever he happened to be around, but that is not enough for Superman. 911 clean up/search and resuce certainly looked like a job for Superman.

In the movie continuity Batman has supposedly been fighting crime in Gotham for years. So much so that he has already retired. Something tells us that Gotham may have needed a Superman from time to time in the past.

A Superman that waits 33 years for a global threat to blackmail him into revealing his presence to the world is not the Superman we know and love. Not the Richard Donner Superman, not the comic book Superman and not anyone’s Superman except for Zack Snyder and David S. Goyer’s cowardly Superman.
