Mayor Michael Bloomberg States Harsh Facts At Press Conference After Hurricane Sandy

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg painted a dark picture with his statements after Hurricane Sandy. At a Thursday press briefing the New York businessman tried to offer some kind solace to his battered constituents.

"I don't think we've had a murder in two or three days. That's some good news" according to Mayor Bloomberg.

After which the mayor pointed out the loss of live in his city from the super storm saying that the death toll from Sandy jumped to 37 people.

Bloomberg's comments may be in bad taste according to some but his statement holds true. As reported by Yahoo News the FBI data states that 515 people were murdered in New York City in 2011 or 1.41 murders per day, or three killings every two days. That was down from 2010, when 536 murders were recorded in the five boroughs.

On Staten Island however they may not be murders occurring but the dire situation there has left a communities flooded, stranded, homeless and now facing the threat of looting from bandits.

The Red Cross and National Guard are there to aid the residents of the island but looting is still occurring.

Mayor Bloomberg cancelled the running of the New York Marathon which encompasses parts of the island and Jim Molinaro President of the Borough Staten Island said help is needed to protect the citizens of his area from the crimes being committed.

"There are people looting stores on Midland Avenue. There is looting taking place in the homes on the South Shore that were destroyed. That is where we need the police," said Molinaro.

Hurricane Sandy has been responsible for at least 157 in the United States.
