‘300’ Gerard Butler ‘Gods of Egypt’ Racist Charges; ‘Point Break’ Star Lands ‘Geostorm’ Sci-Fi Lead

Scottish actor Gerard Butler, best known for his abs in 300, is pretty busy making one move after the next these days. Gerry, who is all set to play the bad-guy with a heart of gold Bodhi in the new Point Break remake, has just been confirmed to be attached to Dean Devlin new sci-fi feature Geostorm. But right now Butler is dealing with a race scandal on the set of his biggest budgeted film to date, Gods of Egypt, down in Australia. The local Aussies are charging that the films hiring practices are racist.

Gerard Butler has talked openly about Gods of Egypt being his biggest, most ambitious cinematic undertaking to date, but if he doesn't get things under control on location down in Australia, Gerry might just blow his big shot.

Though Gods of Egypt is supposed to be about Middle Eastern characters, it is being shot it Australia and stars white actors.

Some local Australians are upset at what they see as racist hiring practices and have over 15,000 names on a petition demanding fair representation.

Australian filmmaker Ruby Hamad summed up the spirit of the protestors' complaint to the Daily Record:

"The time-honored tradition of Hollywood whitewashing continues.

"Every time people of color are whitewashed--and it happens with alarming frequency--those of us who dare complain are told not to overreact, that it's entertainment, that we shouldn't play the race card.

"After all, why should race matter in a good film? It matters as actors of color are routinely sidelined."

If everything goes south down under, Butler can always turn his attention to his next of many projects he has in a holding pattern.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Gerard just added one more up and coming project to his movies-to-do-list:

"Gerard Butler is attached to star in Geostorm, a sci-fi adventure feature written and to be directed by Dean Devlin.

"The story sees Butler playing a stubborn but charming satellite designer who, when the world's climate-controlling satellites malfunction, has to work together with his estranged brother to save the world from a man-made storm of epic proportions.

"A trip into space follows, while on Earth a plot to assassinate the president begins to unfold."

Wow...Production on Geostorm is set to begin this fall, and it already sees more exciting than a bunch of middle-age white men pretending to be old Middle Eastern spirits.
