Hurricane Sandy Forces Carnegie Hall To Close Its Doors For A Second Day

The Orchestra of St. Luke's is the next major act to be cancelled in this classical music season at Carnegie Hall. Lang Lang and Friends, The Mariinsky Orchestra and other acts have all been shut down due to the destructive nature of Hurricane Sandy that struck the region a few days ago on Oct. 29.

Sandy has cost New York and New Jersey billions in dollars of revenue and has claimed lives and damaged property. All major subway and rail lines are down, leaving the two states at basically a standstill.

Without adequate transport ventures into the city is increasingly hard. Orchestra of St. Luke's was scheduled to perform at Carnegie Hall on Nov. 1 at the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at 8 p.m. but officials at the Manhattan venue have rescheduled the performance to Saturday, June. 1 at 8 p.m. The tickets for the Nov. 1 performance will be honored for the new date.

The orchestra if they did perform on the night patrons would have seen Nicholas McGegan as conductor at the helm with the orchestra will playing alongside cellist Alisa Weilerstein. The rescheduled date will feature a new soloist playing with St. Luke's.

McGegan and St. Luke's were set to play Mozart's "Symphony No. 29" and "Chaconne," from "Idomeneo," as well Hadyn's "Symphony No. 99,"

Carnegie Hall also had two other acts on the night first of which was the Voodoo Alters Zombies and Oil Cans which is a part of the "Voices from Latin America," there is no word on what action was taken in terms of this show.

The other show that was slated was pianist Wael Farouk but Carnegie Hall has not issued any statements about his performance.
