New York is still assessing the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. So far there has been loss of life and property and the city is set to lose billions of dollars due to repairs to its transit system which is in disarray and a massive cleanup that is ongoing.

John F. Kennedy Airport, La Guardia Airport and the Newark in New Jersey were all close on the approach of Sandy earlier in the week with JFK slowly creeping back to normalcy. Sandy made thousands of flight to be cancelled in and out of major New York airports.

According to ABC the flight-tracking service FlightAware says that more than 7000 flights were canceled on Tuesday with traffic at JFK now starting to resume slowly.

Delays are prevalent and New York which has the most air traffic in the nation has seen flights coming to and fro masiively affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Cities like Philadelphia, Washington D.C and San Francisco have had flights cancelled to and from New York in the pass days. Now east coast air traffic is starting to increase again with airports in Boston starting to see more activity.

According to the Port Authority of New York it says it doesn't know when LaGuardia which is flooded and Newark will open. Some air carriers have already started to plot a return to the east coast with Delta, Air France and Cathay Pacific and Korean Air all set to be air bound.

Hurricane Sandy has left some passengers stranded overseas like Peter and Sheryl Knight. Who were scheduled to fly home to Washington from Hong Kong on Asia based Cathay Pacific Airways via New York on Wednesday but there flight was cancelled. The airline got them a flight to Chicago so they could fly back home.

The couple said. "We're very anxious to get back and were very much hoping that the flight would be on time, but once we learned it was delayed and once we learned our delay would be only one day - Hong Kong's not a bad place to be for another day."
