Supernatural has been on the air for almost a decade now and has just been renewed for a tenth season. Adam Glass, one of the show’s writers/executive producers, recently commented on the show’s longevity, calling it the “Doctor Who of America.” Just like the Doctor, Glass joked that the show’s stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki should be replaced each year. However, the joke didn’t go over too well and now Glass is paying the price.
Adam Glass recently made the mistake of assuming that internet took context into consideration before deciding to blast something. However, twisted the truth and spouting off in a blind nerd rage is the only language that the internet seems to understand. When Glass jokingly compared Supernatural’s nine-year-run to Doctor Who’s 33, (Stuff a scarf in it Whovians. We are counting the number seasons/serials and not the years since it first premiered.) he wound up biting off a little more than he could chew.
Forget the internets hatred for all things context, Glass joked about replacing Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, telling Comic Book Resources:
“We thought that we would get another season--we’ve been doing really well. I wasn’t there in the beginning when Eric [Krimple] started the show and Sarah was there and Ben Edlund and all them. I actually got to work with all of them as part of the transitional time, but they talked about how every year they thought they were going to get cancelled. Every year, they thought, ‘This was it.’ And by the way, we’re being told that by network--‘You’re on the bubble’--and now look, here we are, ten seasons later. I joke, ‘Why not become the Doctor Who of America?’ Let’s turn around, take the boys as long as they can and eventually find two other hunters. I don’t know if anybody likes that idea outside of me, but I think it’s the kind of show that speaks to people and can keep going for quite a long time.”
After the interview the internet did what the internet does best,..overreact. Some diehard Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki fans either didn’t know he was joking or they didn’t find Glass’ comments funny and started blasting the writer with angry tweets. Glass tried to quell the crap storm by tweeting:
“People. Watch the interview. I say I keep JOKING that we should become like Dr.Who. Of course there is no show without bros. #Supernatural.”
However, that didn’t seem to help much, so he later washed his hands of the whole conversation:
“Guys. I'm done. Can't do this anymore. To much negativity. Everything is taken out of context. Don't need this #Supernatural.”
