The Creative Music Foundation has just released a new compilation CD comprised of music from the CMS Archive Project. This will include nearly 500 concerts that took place at the revered Woodstock Creative Music Studio, between 1973 and 1984.
This three-disc set, labeled the Creative Music Studio Archive Selections; Vol. 1, will be distributed by the American Composers Forum/Innova Recordings, featuring rare recordings divided into small ensemble, orchestral and world music performances.
The set will cost a nominal $29 and is will hit digital countertops, via Amazon and iTunes, on April 29.
Small ensembles feature Ed Blackwell/Charles Brackeen; David Izenson, Ingrid Sertso, James Emery/Leroy Jenkins, Ursula Oppens/Fred Rzewski and, of course, Classicalite favorite Karl Berger.
Orchestral includes Oliver Lake, Olu Dara and Roscoe Mitchell.
And, finally, world will offer Foday Musa Suso, Nana Vasconcelos and Ismet Sirel.
The set includes full-length liner notes of the recording, the history of CMS and Archive Project as well as rare photos from the CMS Archive.
Karl Berger, CMF co-founder and artistic director, says, "These recordings present a cross-section of the cross pollination that occurred regularly at CMS."
"We divided them up neatly for these CDs, but it was far from divided or neat at CMS! These gems show that energy," he continued.
So, keep your ears open for what's to come of the CMS discs. In the meantime, enjoy some exclusive rehearsal footage we got from Karl Berger and his Improvisers Orchestra at Gowanus, Brooklyn's Shapeshifter Lounge.
