CBS ‘Criminal Minds’ Recap Season 9 Review: Beat ‘American Idol’ 2014 Judges as Ratings Sour

While American Idol is still arguably the country's favorite talent show, it certainly isn't its most popular prime time event anymore. Whether it's 2014's judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr.'s recap or just the tired review format is anyone's guess. But the CBS' Criminal Minds, in its 9th Season, made the biggest Nielsen rating numbers leap, trumping Idol by almost half a million Wednesday night viewers.

New American Idol judge and old jazz piano virtuoso Harry Connick Jr, has had no problem adjusting to his role as newest series addition.

Harry told OK! that there was nothing to the show, other than auditioning the hell out of the would-be pop stars that pour through the American Idol doors:

"It feels normal for me to be there--it's not rocket science...I know it was 'off' last year, but it has to be about the contestants. We are serious about finding the best person."

But perhaps he should have considered a slightly more scientific approach, after all.

According to Deadline, Idol's rating stagnation in the face of certain meteoric risers like Criminal Minds, leaves the show looking like it could be playing second or third fiddle in its Wednesday night time slot for weeks to come:

"Fox's two-hour American Idol (2.1) matched last Wednesday's fast national. CBS' Survivor (2.2) slipped a tenth from last week but still edged Idol in the demo for a fourth consecutive week.

"Modern Family (3.2) dipped 9% from last week's fast national after a ratings bump last Wednesday with another out-of-town episode set in Las Vegas. But its audience, 8.78 million, still topped Idol's, 8.77 million.

"Criminal Minds (2.5) was up 14% from its last original two weeks ago and is poised to edge Idol in 18-49 in the 9 PM hour for the first time."

So if American Idol is going to be the least watched show of Wednesday night anyway--can we least get Nikki Minaj and Mariah Carey back.

At least when they ran the rating into the ground, the network had their feud to use as an excuse, and we all got to revel in their verbal throwdowns.

What's the problem with Idol now...Keith Urban and Harry are too nice?
