Lets face facts. The Nintendo Wii U is nowhere near the system that the Xbox One and The PS4 are, and it does not try to be. Instead of trying to be a super-hidef media hub, Nintendo has spent the past few years focusing on what it does best, family-friendly and innovative gaming featuring beloved exclusive characters. Now the system is playing on our nostalgia with two big releases this year. You can take a ride down that Rainbow Road once again in the highly anticipated Mario Kart 8. Nintendo has also just released the official trailer for the Wii U and 3DS versions of the long awaited battle royal extravaganza, Super Smash Bros. Could the new versions of old favorites, revitalize sales of the struggling system in the same way that Titanfall helped turn things around for the Xbox One?
For the past 30+ years, Nintendo has been an essential part of growing up. The company's long list of beloved characters include: Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Samus (Metroid), Link and Zelda, just to name a few. So when the company is trying to see new systems, this list is naturally the first place they will turn.
Nintendo is launching a blue spiny shell this spring when they release the long-awaited, Mario Kart 8. The Wii U debut of the beloved franchise will be released in North America on May 30.
Nintendo is taking a somewhat odd approach with the release of the new Super Smash Bros game. The game is being released on both of Nintendo’s current platforms, the 3DS and The Wii U.
The 3DS version, officially titled Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, will be released first during the summer. The Wii U edition, aptly titled Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, will not drop until the winter.
This unusual release pattern it likely designed to take advantage of the fact that kids are on the go more during the summer, and bundled up inside during the winter.
Do you think the two new Wii U releases will be enough to renew interest in the system? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
