So the big bad in The Winter Soldier was a bit of a letdown, and Iron Man hasn’t had a decent baddie to battle yet. That leavesThor and Avengers antagonist Loki as the undisputed champion villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Enter the new contender, James Spader. The Blacklist star has a long history of playing creepy, morally corrupt characters. Recently, Kevin Feige, Marvel’s president of production, doted on the new Avengers 2: Age of Ultron villain. Could James Spader prove to be better baddie then Tom Hiddleston?
Magneto, Venom, The Green Goblin, Apocalypse and Dr. Doom: some of the Marvel Comics universe's greatest and most well known villains are not owned by Marvel Studios. However, the Disney-owned MCU did manage to hold on to a few big guns.
Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, commands a small cult-like Army of devoted followers. However, Hiddleston’s fangirl following might have to make way for the new kid in town. The Age of Ultron is almost upon us, and with James Spader playing the heartless and soulless metal monster, the new age might prove stronger than the last.
Recently, while speaking with Movies.com, Marvel’s Kevin Feige praised James Spader’s performance in Avengers 2: Age of Ultron:
"Our bad guy is great. I think people are going to very, very excited to see what we're doing with the voice that Joss [Whedon] is bringing to life with James Spader for Ultron. We love Ultron from the comics, and have always loved Ultron, and at no point do we want him to just be a robot. We want him to have an extreme personality and attitude, and James Spader is doing an unbelievable job. Again, for us it's always about subverting expectations. Whenever you think you know what's coming next, we surprise people or deliver it in a slightly unexpected way. And Spader is doing that with Mr. Ultron."
Based on his previous work alone, it seems that if anyone can give Loki a run for his money it's Spader. Are you excited to see Spader’s Ultron? Who do you think is the best Marvel movie so far? What villain do you want see next? Let us know in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
