Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi Divorce Split: ‘Late Show’ Money Not Enough; Turns Down Letterman

Ellen DeGeneres has been named as a potential replacement for David Letterman after he retires from the Late Show in 2015. But Ellen is already making more money than Dave, so it would take some very heavy handed negotiating to get DeGeneres to split with NBC and Warner Brothers. Besides Ellen is going to need that WB money to get through her reportedly inevitable divorce from Portia de Rossi.

David Letterman surprised the world last night when he announced he would retiring from his iconic position as host of the Late Show on CBS in 2015.

The announcement immediately fueled speculation that the queen of day time talk, Ellen DeGenres, should replace Letterman, once he finally steps down.

That seems less than likely however being that Ellen is facing a potential divorce, and the Late Show gig would actually mean a cut is her substantial salary.

According to Forbes, CBS may very well love to have Ellen at the helm, but it is doubtful that they would be able to pay her:

"CBS has made a real effort in recent years to diversify their slate. Considering that, what could be more of a statement about the network's future plans than to put American's day-time talk show darling [Ellen] in the hot seat of Late Show?

"[But] it would take some negotiating as Ellen does earn more than Letterman at the moment, there might be no grander play to be made by CBS."

And word has it Ellen is going to need every dollar she can get her hands on once Portia decides to make her inevitable move for the door.

A friend of Portia's told Star that de Rossi was going to be leaving, and she wasn't planning on living like a pauper after the split:

"Portia feels that she has definitely earned half of Ellen's fortune for putting up with her for so long.

"You'd better believe that is she moves forward with this divorce she will fight for every penny she can get!"

Sounds like Ellen is going to need to really hurry this divorce along, if she wants to get the thing finalized before 2015.
