A 39-year-old man identified as Javier Solorio Jr. was killed by a shark attack on Tuesday Oct. 23 off the coast Surf Beach near Lompoc according to NBC News.
Solorio was dragged from the water by a friend who tried to perform CPR on the victim. He was pronounced dead on the spot.
Solorio was surfing and had to have visible signs of bite marks this according to Lt. Erik Raney of the sheriff's department in Santa Monica. Lt. Raney also said he was "bitten by the shark in the upper torso area."
"We've had shark sightings up and down the Santa Barbara coastline pretty frequently recently," said Lt. Raney.
The attack happened near the Vandenberg Air Force Base and at the time of the attack the base's fire department was contacted around 11 a.m. to the 911 call made by one of the surfers on the scene.
The identity of the species of shark that may have killed the 39-year-old Orcutt man is unknown at this point.
According to NBC fatal shark attacks have happened in recent years at this beach with the most recent coming in 2010.
Lucas Ransom a 19-year-old college student was killed at Surf Beach when he was bodyboarding he was said to have vanished under the surf 100 yards from shoreline.
The Vanderberg Air Force Base confirmed that Solorio Jr. had no conncetion with the base. Nathan Winkles, friend of the victim said "he was a really good surfer," according to KEYT-TV in Santa Barbara.
In Santa Barbara Harbor about 65 miles from Surf Beach a 14 foot great white shark was spotted by a surfer according to Yahoo News.
