Once Upon a Time in Wonderland has officially been canceled. The short lived, ABC show will air what is now the series finale next week. Now fans are wondering if the Once Upon a Time spin-off will be replaced by yet another fairy tale spin-off.
ABC’s Once Upon a Time in Wonderland turned out to not be the fairy tale dream come true that the parent series was. During the Television Critics Association's winter press tour, Paul Lee, ABC’s entertainment group president, attributed the show’s low ratings to airing it on Thursdays, instead of a between season replacement for Once Upon a Time:
"That would have been a natural audience to go through there,That Thursday slot is difficult. We loved the idea. We knew the creative was great, and so we loved the idea of having a run of empowered women going all the way through Thursday night. What we didn’t want to do is play defense on Thursday when we wanted to play offense. But in retrospect, I think it would have done better there, and I should have stuck to the earlier idea. … I totally take responsibility for that."
ABC Studios chief Patrick Moran echoed the statement, when he told The Hollywood Reporter that the series was disappointing:
“I really had hoped that Once Upon a Time in Wonderland would work. It was designed to be what they call ‘gap programming,’ to go in between the regular season, and it probably would have fared better as that.”
Just because the trip down the rabbit hole didn’t fare well, it doesn’t mean that the network won't try again with a different fairy tale location. With the vast richness of the Disney fairy tale world, producers have quite the supply of stories to choose from.
