World Cycling's governing body Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has stripped American cyclist Lance Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles on Monday, Oct. 22 this according to CBS News.
The committee who met in Geneva, Switzerland over the weekend has vacated all Tour de France titles the cyclist has won in the past thus taking away the riders victories from 1999 to 2005.
The sanctions were lodged due evidence released by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) in the past weeks that included the testimonies of former teammates of Armstrong and procedures used to boost performance.
"Lance Armstrong is no longer the winner of the Tour de France 1999-2005," said Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme."
These events has led the USADA to say that Armstrong should be stripped and banned of his Tour titles for what they dubbed "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen."
The USADA recently revealed documents of the alleged actions of the disgraced athlete actions suggesting that Armstrong used techniques like blood transfusions to gain an upper hand in races.
Recently Armstrong had stepped down as chairman from his Livestrong charity and lost the personal backing off retail giants Nike and RadioShack.
"Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him. Nike does not condone the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs in any manner," said Nike in a statement
Armstrong who was at a charity event in his native Texas told crowds it was a "very difficult," few weeks and also went to say. "I've been better, but I have also been worse."
UCI President Pat McQuaid said that his organization has accepted USADA's reports and that Armstrong will not appeal the charges.
