New York City Ballet Dancer Janie Taylor Opens Up About Ballet & Her Illness

New York City Ballet's Janie Taylor sat down with Time Out New York to talk about her role in Justin Peck's "Year of the Rabbit," what it's like to work with him and her bout with illness.

When speaking to Time Out New York about the play by Peck she said.

"He 's using music by Sufjan Stevens which is based on different years of the zodiac. There are six different years, but there is nothing specifically Chinese or animal about the ballet; I think there are hints of some animalistic qualities that are in the music. It's not blatant."

She also added. "You just get the feeling of some of the characteristics of the animals, even the movement patterns. A rabbit is not necessarily very fast, but evades its predators by changing direction quickly. The corps does a lot of really cool things. One of the sections I do is more upbeat, and then I do a very, very slow pas de deux. It's nice to go to either end of the spectrum."

The ballerina was stricken by illness in recent time and opened up about the experience. She had complications with her bodyafter which she consulted her doctor who advice her to go to an emergency room. She had been suffering from a low platelet count. A situation that prompted her to use steroids a substance that led her to be weak.

"The four days I was on them, my joints would be loose...I'd be performing and I thought I was going to sprain my ankle every five seconds."

When asked if she thought about quitting Taylor said. "I didn't ever want to...If I hadn't had that drive inside of me, I would have easily quit. It was very depressing. I always felt it was important to me."
