‘Arrow:’ Colton Haynes' Speedy Transformation Into Arsenal and New ‘Flash’ Tie-In Episode

It is a good time to be a fan of the CW’s Arrow. The Arrowverse is expanding, growing larger all the time. The DC Comics series has proven so successful that it has already sparked a spin-off series, early in on its second season. Now with the Flash in production, the show has had to rearrange its plans of to have Grant Gustin show up in Episode 19. However, the Arrow producers have some big surprises planned in its place, that also ties into the new series. Speaking of other superheroes, the show is finally starting to turn Oliver’s sidekick, Roy Harper, played by Colton Haynes, into his comic counterpart, Arsenal. However, he he will have to go by the nickname Speedy first.

The DC universe is building more and more on the new series Arrow. From the Birds of Prey, to the Suicide Squad, the show keeps introducing the Emerald Archer to more and more characters.

Earlier in the season, Barry Allen found his footing as The Flash on on the show. Former Glee actor Grant Gustin was supposed to reappear on the show, in Episode 19. However, with the spin-off in production and The Flash in a coma, the tie-in was scrapped, sort of.

As it turns out some Flash characters will show up in the new episode, now titled, "The Man Under the Hood."

Arrow executive producer and writer Marc Guggenheim recently offered Collider a few spoilers about the episode:

“The reason I’ve been holding off on Tweeting the title page for Episode 19 is that 19 is co-written by Geoff Johns, Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti, the team behind The Flash, and I felt like, if I Tweeted that, the jig would be up. Little did I know, the jig would get out itself. But Danielle Panabaker, who plays Caitlin, and Carlos Valdes, who plays Cisco, two members of Star Labs that are part of the regular cast of The Flash, do make an important appearance in Episode 19 of Arrow. This was something that really came about because Barry was in a coma at the end of Episode 9 and that made it impossible for Barry to appear in Episode 19 or 20 of Arrow. He’s gotta stay in a coma until October of next year. But, the idea of bringing in those characters really appealed to us because it allowed us to honor our original intention that we had at the beginning of the year, to do something Flash-related in Episode 19 or 20, without having comatose Barry and paying Grant Gustin a lot of money to sit around with his eyes closed, unconscious for the whole episode.”

Guggenheim went on to talk about Arrow’s scarlet clad sidekick, Roy Harper. In an upcoming episode, Harper will take on the moniker of Speedy, but not for long:

“We want to keep inching Roy towards an Arsenal place. One of the runnings gags is that he keeps getting called Speedy and says, ‘I don’t like that nickname. Come up with another nickname for me.’ When the time is right, eventually the nickname that will stick will be Arsenal, but the time has to be right.”

Arrow airs Wednesday nights on the CW at 8:oo p.m.
