Former Cuban president Fidel Castro has suffered a stroke and is said to be in 'a neurovegetative state' this according to the Miami Herald.
Castro has said to have suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and is having problems carrying out basic motors skills such as eating,speaking and according to Venezuelan officials the former Cuban leader is having difficulty recognizing people.
Jose Marquina a respected doctor who oversaw Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez's recent illness said.
"He suffered an embolic stroke and recognizes absolutely no one. The people with a condition of this nature have difficulty eating and, of course, they end up with total deficit in their neurologic capacities."
Castro's state has led the Cuban government to release statements on the leaders on condition according to CNN.
"The comandante is well, following his daily routine, reading, exercising," said Alex Castro son of Fidel Castro.
Castro was last seen in public in March, during the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Cuba. The leader who usually writes columns regularly entitled "Reflections," has not done so in a while nor has he contacted Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on his successful re-election.
News of Castro's illness has prompted President Chavez to fly to the Caribbean island to see after his stricken friend according to Marquina.
The doctor also went on to say the former leader is in his home in El Laguito, Havana receiving constant and specialized medical care.He also said that the death of patients with this type of illness generally comes in the form of respiratory complications and irreversible infections.
