"Unfolding in free time," says Alan Roth about his documentary on famed avant-garde all-stars The New York Art Quartet.
The Breath Courses Through Us (2013) reaches back into the collections--and recollections--of the group's foundation and innovative musical ideas.
You'll recall, NYAQ has been in existence since the October Revolution in Jazz, circa 1964.
Roth explains: "The story of the New York Art Quartet is not only found in the historical details, but in the interplay between artists, the joy they feel in being with each other and performing, and the transcendent nature of their live performances."
The New York City premiere will be held Sunday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Jonas Mekas' Anthology Film Archives on Second Avenue.
Also on the bill: Michael Snow's rarely seen 1964 film New York Eye and Ear Control, with the music and images of Albert Ayler, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Don Cherry, Sunny Murray and Gary Peacock.
The Breath... is the second of Roth's examination of the free jazz realm, his first being Inside Out in the Open (2001).
Watch the trailer. And be amazed, indeed.
