It was recently revealed that Pastor Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church is near death. Phelps' estranged son recently learned and broke the news. Meanwhile, on the other side of the coin, Pastor Billy Graham has not been doing so well, himself. Check the health update below for the latest on Graham’s health condition.
Nathan Phelps left the church when he turned 18, and has became an outspoken LGBT activist. Recently, Nathan learned that his father was dying, as he stated in a Facebook post:
“I've learned that my father, Fred Phelps, Sr., pastor of the ‘God Hates Fags’ Westboro Baptist Church, was ex-communicated from the ‘church’ back in August of 2013. He is now on the edge of death at Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas.
“I'm not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made.
“I feel sad for all the hurt he's caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And I'm bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their good-byes.”
Following the post, the Topeka Capital-Journal reached out to the church for a comment. Steve Drain a spokesperson for the WBC responded:
“We don't owe any talk to you about that. We don't discuss our internal church dealings with anybody. It's only because of his notoriety that you are asking."
Fred Phelps and the WBC have negatively affected the lives of millions. Many critics of the WBC have been celebrating the news. One Facebook user, Holly Day, recently commented on the subject, writing:
“Oh, come on people. Don't pretend for one second you didn't fist-pump when you learned that sleezy f*****g s***head is dying. The only part I'm disappointed about is that he hasn't croaked just yet. I'm not going to sit here and pretend he's worth another breath on this planet, because he's just not.”
There are also many others that feel fighting hate with hate is not the right response.
Meanwhile, Pastor BIlly Graham has also recently fallen on hard times. Graham’s son Franklin spoke with reporters back in January where he said his father was “only okay,” before adding:
“We’re all concerned for him, but he’s stable. He’s at home and he’s comfortable.”
