Production on Fast and Furious 7 in reportedly set to resume in Abu Dhabi on April 10, tragically without the franchise's core cast member Paul Walker, whose autopsy proved was still alive immediately following the tragic car crash. Michelle Rodriguez is proud of her work on the Fast flicks, and claims that the films changed Hollywood by exposing audiences to the "chemistry" that could exist between a multicultural cast.
Fast 7 is officially up and running again, or at least will be by this time next month.
According to the reputable industry rag Variety, everything is all but official, the cast and crew will be descending on Abu Dhabi come April 10, to pick up essential where they left off:
"The Abu Dhabi Film Commission and Universal Pictures in a statement have announced that director James Wan and actor/producer Vin Diesel, as well as stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, will join the crew in Abu Dhabi to continue production."
That is music to the ears of Michelle Rodriguez, who recently told Slate in an interview that she thinks the Fast franchise signals a sea change in the way Hollywood will make films in the future:
"I feel that the success of the Fast and Furious franchise has a lot to do with globalization (its multicultural cast); its timing, with a launch at the birth of a new millennium; and a rare, innovative storytelling style. It took a new look at street racing and Latino, black, Asian, and Caucasian camaraderie and exposed the melting pot that is the new world.
"The chemistry of the cast built the loyal fan base... for a multicultural audience that usually has no heroes in Hollywood to relate to.
"The world's majority is Hollywood's minority, and when that changes as the standard modus operandi, that's when I believe blockbusters will reach a whole new global fan-base quota never really met before outside of Avatar and Titanic.
"We just need some really talented people to place their Hollywood bets on a brown, yellow, black, and white cast instead of limiting heroes to one race or one sex."
You have to admire the presence of mind to tact back and make sure she didn't offend Hollywood's reigning king James Cameron in the middle of a self-aggrandizing rant like that.
Aren't action start, and let's face it actors in general, supposed to be dumb.
Maybe Tinsel Town really is changing.
