Oscar winner and True Detective cast member Matthew McConaughey had to get in touch with himself, before he could really unlock his artistic potential that has catapulted him to the top of Hollywood's most talented list, but the wide-eyed Texan still prefers the joy he gets from time spent with his wife and kids over the affection that accolades bring.
Matthew McConaughey was drawn to the Oscar winning role of Ron Woodroof, because like Matt he didn't ever spend time feeling sad or sorry for himself (via OK! Magazine):
"Ron was a self-serving, self-preserving, hustling son of a bitch all the way through.
"I was happy that it never got sentimental. I don't have the best relationship with sentimentality...Sometimes I like it, other times I think it's foolish."
"The day to day architecture of creating a world, that's when I'm happiest."
McConaughey told the Telegraph that he wanted to do something about the direction his career was headed in, but first he had to spend some time alone and figure out which direction he was headed in:
"I was like, OK. Is there a way my career can catch up with the vitality of my own life? So I said, wait for some roles that move my floor. That shake me up a little bit.
"I have to check out so I can listen to myself. For the first 10 days it's hell. Can't stand my company, have to shake all the demons, all the excesses, the wanting to call a friend - 'Aww, I'm alone, I'm so lonely' - and then you stick with it and what happens about day nine, always day nine, a little old thing goes off. 'Well, guess what, man, you're stuck with me. There's nothing you can do so let's figure out how to get along. Whatever it is I forgive you. Let's work on this.' No matter who you're in bed with you're always sleeping with one person and that's you."
Though he is most in love with his career when he gets to make a movie he loves, he is the happiest in his life when he is with the ones he loves.
A friend tells OK! that without his family the fortune and fame just wouldn't matter:
"[His family] have spurred him into seeking even greater happiness.
"He says that work is nowhere near as rewarding as what his kids bring into his life."
Yeah...but he probably said that before he one that Oscar last Sunday night.
