Americans cast members Kerry Russell and Matthew Rhys play cavorting Cold War comrades so well, even Matt's mom has a tendency to believe rumor reviews that the two are dating outside the show. But Rhys wants to assure her and the rest of the world that the stories are false, and he's still a devoted family man.
Kerry Russell and Matthew Rhys play a red hot conflicted KGN couple on FX's hit series The Americans so well, people can't help but speculate the two must be more than just co-workers.
The 39-year-old Welsh actor's mother is even sometimes thrown by what she reads on the internet.
Matthew told People that he often has to explain to his own mother that not everything on Yahoo News is really real:
"She calls up going, 'What's going on? I just read this about you.'
"I tell her, 'You have to take off your Google alerts.'
"That is the best [rumor] I love.
"I've told her a million times that there are a million inaccuracies that she's read, [but she still] calls and goes, 'Is this true?' I tell her, 'No! When are you going to get it?' "
Russell isn't exactly sure why everyone wants to focus on her on-screen relationship with Rhys, when she feels this season is more about the whole ensemble than just the marriage (via Mercury News):
"Last year was a metaphor on marriage, this year is a metaphor on family.
"Philip and Elizabeth (started) the season with a new kind of unified front with each other. Certainly Elizabeth hasn't been engaged emotionally before, and I think she has decided this is where she wants to be.
"What's fun about the show is that Elizabeth goes on all these spy missions, and then she's in the car flipping out like a normal mom about something that her 14-year-old girl is doing.
Fair enough, but some people might argue that the sex scenes are a bit more fun to watch.
