‘Modern Family’ Cast Member News: Sofia Vergara, Sarah Hyland and Ed O’Neill Emmy Regrets

Many of the Modern Family cast members are branching out from the ABC hit sitcom to further broaden their Hollywood horizons. Sofia Vergara can have her pick of any leading lady role that she wants, thanks to the show's popularity. Likewise, Sarah Hyland is making news by cashing in on the show's success, starring in Sherman and Mr. Peabody. Many of the extended cast look to fill their time and flush out the resumes between seasons with all kinds of different projects, but for Ed O'Neill Modern Family is the only vehicle he has left to get the Emmy that has eluded him for more than 20 years.

Though Modern Family has won an Emmy for Best Comedy Series for the past four years in a row and other cast members Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen have five Emmys between them; Ed O'Neill has yet to win the award, despite making nearly 30 years of television history.

Show producer Dan O'Shannon said that in his opinion O'Neill's work is overdue for some serious recognition (via GoldDerby):

"Sadly, the unsung hero is Ed O'Neill. I think some of the stuff that's really great about him is sometimes maybe overlooked in the bigger comedy of the other characters. But he just really holds the show down."

The former Mr. Bundy told Access Hollywood that all thing considered, he looks just as forward to not being nominated as he does to the inevitable not winning (via Gold Derby):

"You want the calls [on Emmy nominations morning], but at the same time you kind of don't want it. You know what I mean? It's like, I don't want to think about it. It's okay!"

Though O'Neill might not have found his Emmy niche just yet, he knows that his future in television is far from over.

While recently accepting his Star being placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with both his famous TV wives Katey Sagal and Sofia Vergara in toe, Ed noted aloud that he was going to be in show business for generations to come:

"And you know, I can't help but thinking right now as I'm standing here -- it's a bit emotional -- that somewhere in the world at this moment in a hospital, a beautiful little baby girl is being born. And when she grows up she's going to be my next wife on TV, and I'm looking forward to it."

It's safe to say that that's something everyone is looking forward to watching.
