Talk about two late tastes sure to taste great together: Juilliard Jazz presents "Freddie and Joe," featuring the music of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard alongside saxophonist Joe Henderson at Juilliard's Paul Hall.
Of course, Hubbard is regarded as one of the most gifted trumpeters of the post-bop era. And Henderson, no slouch himself, played with many leading artists of that same time and recorded for both the Blue Note and Verve labels.
We remember the duo most, though, for leading the original Jazz Communicators from 1967-68.
For Juilliard's tribute, Frank Kimbrough and Xavier Davis will lead some of the school's own best-read: trumpeters Jordan Pettay and Jonathan Calloner, trombonist Matthew Musselman, guitarist Adam Moezinia, bassist Luke Sellick and Sammy Miller behind the kit.
The ensemble will perform Crisis, Lament for Booker and Byrdlike by Hubbard, as well as Henderson's Shade of Jade and Jinrikisha.
And get this...free tickets will be available for the April 1 performance (beginning March 17) on the Juilliard Jazz website.
If Juilliard Jazz's take on Herbie Hancock is any indication, well, you'll want to witness this one.
