Recently the cast and crew of the hit CW series The Vampire Diaries lost a member of their TVD family, when camera assistant Sarah Jones was tragically killed on the set Midnight Rider. Cast, crew and fans banded together to petition the Motion Picture Academy to include Jones in the In Memoriam at last weekend’s Oscar ceremonies. Not only did the Academy honor Jones, but TVD cast members Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, among many others, have shared their personal memories of Jones.
Sarah Jones, a camera assistant for The Vampire Diaries, was tragically killed when she struck by a train on the set of Midnight Rider. Her death has now sparked an outcry campaign for safer conditions on film sets.
Jones’ TVD family and many others are pushing a social media campaign called, Safety for Sarah.
Nina Dobrev recently tweeted about the campaign, after the Academy honored Sarah at last sunday’s Oscars:
“important and an integral part of every film. Its a puzzle. We couldn't complete it without every single piece. #safetyforsarah”
Last week Ian Somerhalder tweeted a personal tribute to Jones, writing:
“My heart is heavy-the TVD fam&I lost a very dear sister of ours.An amazing woman, leaving us too soon.Hug your loved ones, hug them so tightly.”
Caroline Dries, TVD Executive Producer, recently spoke to Hollywood Life about the Oscar petition, as well as Slates for Sarah and Safety for Sarah:
“Yes, [the cast and crew] would like to have her name at the Oscars’ ‘In Memoriam’ section. But more so, [the campaign] is about awareness about Sarah specifically… and also, more awareness about set safety. [It's about] having the leadership roles on set really step up and say ‘no.’ What we said to the crew the day after we learned [about Sarah's death] was ‘no shot will ever be as important as you, as your friends, as your family… as you are as people. This is not the end of the world. This job will never be the end of the world. You are always the most important person; the most important thing.’”
