The group on the night will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's String Quartet in D Major, K.499, "Hoffmeister." Also being performed on the night will be Witold Lutoslawski's "String Quartet." This will be followed by Ludwig van Beethoven's String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 74, "Harp."

The Philharmonia Quartett Berlin is an extended branch of the Berliner Philharmoniker and was formed in 1984. It comprises of the four leading members of the string section of the German orchestra and since its creation in 1984 all members have remained the same except that of the cellist, in February 2009 cellist Jan Diesselhorst passed away suddenly prompting the group to recruit Dietmar Schwalke as his replacement.

The foursome is known for their covering of the works of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Shostakovich and Reger. Their work covering Reger saw them awarded the "Deutscher Schallplattenpreis." The ECHO Klassik Award was given to them twice for their role in playing Chamber Music.

The quartet plays regularly alongside its main orchestra to go along with their touring that sees them play the world over in places such as Asia, Europe, North and South America. Some of their more illustrious performances see them before in Vatican City at the request of Pope Benedict XVI as well stops at the Palacio Real de Madrid to play for the Spanish Royal Family.
