The True Detective cast would have looked quite a bit differently had Matthew McConaughey not signed up to the project so early on. Woody Harrelson, who loves his co-star "like a brother" admits he wouldn't have joined if not for McConaughey. Matthew must have been enthused by the project, because he knew it was written for him, at least in a way. Spoilers: The Texan stared in an Unsolved Mysteries episode that mirrors the HBO series plot right down to Matt red pickup.
Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey have known each other for years.
In fact, had McConaughey not already been attached to the HBO, project Woody would not have been interested in the series.
Harrelson told Metro that his close relationship with his buddy was really the only thing attracted him to the project at first:
"I love Matthew McConaughey, he's like a brother to me. I honestly wouldn't have done it, except that Matthew was doing it. He jumped into it and said 'yes' before any other actors were involved. He related to the writing and knew how good it was from just the two episodes he'd read.
"I had already worked with HBO on the film Game Change and there's just no finer organization out there making more amazing stuff than HBO."
Truth be told, Matthew had already had some experience with the subject matter.
Though no one at the show is ready to confirm it, the plot, at times, seems eerily similar to that of an episode of Unsolved Mysteries the starred none other than Mr. Dallas Buyers Club himself.
According to Slate not only does Matthew's character battle a sexual predator who goes after children, he even drives a new exact copy of his red truck:
"Note that this case from Unsolved Mysteries involves not only murder, but the sexual violation of children.
"Is it a coincidence that this segment features a woman named Dorothy Lang, while True Detective centers on the death of a Dora Lange?
"And what about that red truck, which looks an awful lot like the one that Rust Cohle drives?"
Even more disturbing is McConaughey's character gets blown away in the end and the bad guy gets away.
Let's hope HBO lets them solve the hell out of this mystery.
