Lincoln Center: London Symphony Orchestra to play with James Ehnes

The Lincoln Center will play host to the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) on Monday, Oct. 22 at the Avery Fisher Hall at 8 p.m. The English orchestra will be joined by the multiple award winning Canadian violinist James Ehnes.

Before the concert commences there will be a lecture given lecturer Christopher H. Gibbs at 6:45 p.m. in the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse.

The program will consist of the violinist accompanying the orchestra in a Johannes Brahms episode of music. The evening will see the German's "Tragic Overture; Violin Concerto; Symphony No. 2," being played and will be consisted of two parts.

The Times (London) once described the London Symphony Orchestra as having "shining precision, rounded tones, and spirited emotions."

This more than a century old orchestra will be led by principal conductor by Russian Valery Gergiev. Gergiev has had a highly decorated career so far. He has been associated with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) and the Armenian Philharmonic to along with his work with the LSO.

The Muscovite is also known for his works in opera. He is the general director of the Mariinsky Theatre in Russia and also the artistic director of the West Nights Festival in St. Petersburg. Gergiev has also done work at the Metropolitan Opera House in the capacity of principal guest director.

His partner on the night James Ehnes has multiple accolades to his name including six Juno awards, a Grammy and Gramophone award.

The violinist was born in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada in 1976. At the age of four he took up the violin. In 1997 Ehnes graduated from the Juilliard School. The artist has been has produced a collection of work in almost every year since then to 2010.
