Every now and then, I have to remind myself that James Booker was a real, live, gay piano-playing machine.
Yes, the big boogie-woogie pianist remains a legend among legends, existing in a realm similar to Liberace--but, ya know, for the blues.
Dr. John described him as "the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced."
And he was dead on.
Hopefully, you haven't forgotten about Booker, but if you have, then you may want to reserve some time for a new documentary on the late artist.
To wit, Bayou Maharajah: The Tragic Genius of James Booker will premiere at South by Southwest next month.
The doc will also make an appearance as a part of San Francisco's Noise Pop Festival (all you need is an excuse to fest, apparently).
So, mark your SxSW and Noise Pop agendas accordingly.
