Paco De Lucía, Revered Flamenco and Jazz Guitarist from Andalucia, Dead at 66

Paco De Lucía, a superstar among flamenco guitarists, has died aged 66.

Born Francisco Gustavo Sánchez Gomes, and best known for his flamenco albums, he also played classical and jazz.

Some of his finest collaborations were in these spheres, as with the jazz guitar star John McLaughlin.

The mayor of Algeciras, the city which has declared two days of mourning, called De Lucía "an irreparable loss for the world of culture and for Andalucia."

A brilliant virtuoso, De Lucía's brand of musical energy reinvigorated flamenco, and he was in the forefront of the genre's new popularity in the 1970's.

He featured in the 1983 Carlos Saura film of Carmen.
