Marvel recently wowed audiences with the trailer for the upcoming 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' However, many critics are wondering if a witty lead and gun toting raccoon will be enough to hold viewers' attention--enter Avengers villain Thanos. Marvel’s cosmic big baddie, who was last seen in the Avengers coda, will be featured in the new film. Now director James Gunn is opening up about Thanos’ role in the film. Meanwhile, Marvel must have a lot of faith in the movie, because it has been rumored that a sequel is already planned for the studio’s Phase Three.
The film's director James Gunn was recently on the Pointless Podcast with Kevin Pereira, where he opened up about Thanos’s role in the new film:
"The Marvel Cinematic Universe takes out of both the 616 and Ultimate Marvel Comics universe, and then they recreate some elements themselves. What Thanos wants in the comics is not necessarily what Thanos wants in the movies; we don't know yet."
However, it has been previously reported that Thanos' role will be more of a puppet master than main villain for the film.
Thanos is undoubtedly the biggest names in the movie, so with him taking a backseat, many are wondering if the film can hold up on its on. However, Marvel’s President of Production and Chairman of Chatterbox, Kevin Feige, doesn’t seem worried. Feige recently spoke with Collider about the rag-tag group of heroes:
“It’s not a secret. Nobody knows it. It was not a successful live action TV show in the ‘70s. It didn’t have a successful cartoon line. It isn’t a part of video games. It is the least known, which is exactly why we’re doing it. Do you know what I’m feeling here? I’m feeling excitement for Batman vs. Superman. I’m excited for that. It’s awesome. But it’s another movie with combined comic book characters. I think they’ll be excited for what we’re doing with Thor. I think they’ll be excited for what we’re doing with Captain America, but there’s a sense that I feel here, which is, ‘we love this. They’re revealing the Winter Soldier! Oh my God, look what Loki’s doing!’ But there’s a sense of, ‘what’s new?’ Some people--not enough people--liked Pacific Rim so much. That was the newest thing in the world.”
Feige, has an awful lot of faith in the new film. Perhaps that is why rumors for the sequel have already started popping up. Rumor has it the film has a Phase Three spot reserved for 2016.
