News has it American Idol will reportedly lose money this season, a first for the franchise, due to the extraordinarily high cast salaries paid to Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Seacrest. Harry Connick Jr. is earning significantly less and drawing just as many viewers as his adjustment in pay would suggest. No one is yet reporting what Randy Jackson makes, or what he's doing there.
The nation's once truest love, American Idol, is set to end the season with its accounts in the red for the first time in its illustrious thirteen season history.
According to scourge of the earth TMZ, Idol is in the gutter due to rising salaries and lowering ratings:
"The reasons for American Idol going into the red for the first time all have to do with the bottom line. The show pays a fortune to the stars--we're told Jennifer Lopez gets north of $15 Mil and Ryan Seacrest gets around that amount as well.
"They are also still paying the 2 executive producers they fired after last season.
"And the ratings are down 26% from last season--and that translates into advertising dollars. Some of the ad losses can be deferred until next season...but they are losses nonetheless."
Plus, they reportedly have to spend over $5 million in caller voting fees-that may be why they are switching up the voting format, in a push to move more towards social media mediums.
According to the Latin Post, producers of Idol are switching things up, no doubt in an effort to save money:
"Voting on American Idol is about to get a major update- -thanks to Google and Facebook.
"Viewers using Google Search and Facebook will be able to vote during the show rather than waiting for the end, starting with this week's shows. And voters will be able to vote up to 50 times per contestant, rather than being limited to 50 online votes overall as in the past."
The network is selling this new cost saving service to the audience as a more fully integrated and transparent system (via Latin Post):
"Facebook will power images that show real-time East Coast voting trends, allowing at-home viewers to get a first-ever look at an exciting array of voting information, such as demographic voting trends and relative contestant rankings."
Right, and now Amazon is going to try and sell me Randy Jackson dolls every time I go to the website.
