Victoria and David Beckham's relationship with News of the World and The Sun became a matter of court record this week. Rebekah Brooks claims that during tenure as editor of the presently defunct publications, now embroiled in phone hacking allegations, her organization paid Beckham £1 million (approximately $1.7 million) for his contributions to the Sun. He also announced plans to start a new MLS franchise team in Miami.
It was revealed in court this week by none other than infamous former News of the World editor Rebekah Brookes during a line of questioning from her counsel, Jonathan Laidlaw QC about her old companies monetary budgets, that she had once authorized the payment of well over $1 million to David Beckham for two autobiographies and one column that he contributed to the publications
The Guardian reports that Beckham liked writing about himself, and they didn't mind paying him for it.
"Brooks told the court large sums would be paid for exclusives, including a £1m package with Beckham for his autobiography and a Sun column.
'"I think he had two goes at an autobiography," she said of the football star, explaining he did one book in 2000 and another when she was editor of the daily tabloid, which was published by Harper Collins."
Not a bad way to make some more money than most of us will ever see in our lives.
And he is going to need it, because apparently Mr. Beckham has some pretty big plans for his latest soccer enterprise in Miami (via BBC):
"I have worked with some of the biggest clubs and greatest players and this is a dream...We're planning to bring a team that will be a global team. I want to create a team that we can start from scratch and I am going to work hard for this city to make this team very successful."
And after that, another autobiography.
