Things are starting to heat up for Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles. The songstress is embarking on her own solo project and just released a new song, “Falling.” However, when things heat up, you start to find yourself having to put out fires. Nettles recently addressed long standing rumors that she is a lesbian, as well as reports that Sugarland was breaking up.
Jennifer Nettles is a well known supporter of LGBT rights. It has also long been rumored the songstress herself was gay. Nettles addressed the issue recently in an interview with Pride Source’s Between the Lines feature:
"I had such a strong lesbian following, and in the gay community as a whole, I've always had so much support from them. I think a lot of people assumed, too. Whenever they heard a woman with an alto voice playing an acoustic instrument stylistically reminiscent of those wonderful icons you counted, Ani DiFranco and Indigo Girls--and especially with the audience I had in my 20s--I think a lot of people just assumed [that I was lesbian]."
Nettles went on to add that she doesn’t really care how people label her:
“I've really found that everybody just wants to be authentic. That's all I've ever wanted to do, and so what if I have a short haircut and someone assumes something one way or another. It doesn't bother me. I don't care. A lot of times we're just trying to relate to each other and trying to figure out where we fit in. So if I have a short haircut and that makes me gay or straight or whatever to someone else, I don't care.”
That is not the only rumors Nettles has had to put an end to.
Nettles was recently chatting it up with the ladies of The View, when she addressed the rumors that the band has broken up:
"Quite the opposite. I can't be in two different places at the same time and I put 100 percent of myself into something….I didn't want to do a solo project out of dislike of the band. I love that music but there's something else I had to prove to myself.
