3-years-old may seem pretty young for a toddler to be admitted to Mensa, but a girl from Arizona now has that honor. Alexis Martin is the newest Young Mensan.
Ian Martin must be one proud parent. His daughter Alexis has earned the title "young Mensan." Only 3,500 people (all under 18) can claim that honor.
Is there any other distinguishing factor about Alexis?
Yes...she is only 3. USA Today describes her intellect, in relation to her peers:
"Alexis Martin, of Queen Creek, has an IQ higher than 99.9% of other 3-year-olds. She started reading when she was 2, and now reads at a fifth grade-level, her father, Ian, told ABC15. The average IQ is 100. Alexis' score exceeds 160."
Edward Amend, who's an expert in the field of identifying gifted children, told USA Today how one might identify a child of superior intellect:
"Early signs of giftedness include having a large vocabulary, the ability to speak in sentences rather than a few words here and there and the ability to teach oneself to read at an early age."
Alexis father, Ian Martin, also described what she was like at one. According to ABC 15, it was evident that Alexis was a genius from early on:
"From 12-18 months old, we'd be driving around in the car and she would recite her bedtime story from the night before. She didn't just recite them, she recited them exactly."
What do you think about Alexis' induction into Mensa? Is it dangerous to put so much pressure on such a young child? Do you have a toddler that you think is gifted?
