"Opera's coolest soprano" lauds the New York Times Magazine of Danielle de Niese, a singer who's best peformances have often come at the Metropolitan Opera. This Spring, the lovely soprano returns to New York City for two productions: The Enchanted Island and Cosi fan tutte.
These appearances follow last year's engagement in Così as well as her brilliant, last-minute turn as Cleopatra in the Met's production of Giulio Cesare (where she covered Handel's stuff for Natalie Dessay).
Jeremy Sams, another frequent Met success, will reinstall his 2012 version of The Enchanted Island. This modern pastiche opera, based on Shakespeare's The Tempest and A Midsummer Night's Dream, finds de Niese reprising her role as Ariel--opposite Susan Graham (Sycorax), David Daniels (Prospero) and the great Plácido Domingo (Neptune).
And come April, de Nese will channel Despina in Lesley Koening's production of Cosi, conducted, yes, by maestro James Levine. Having sung the same last September, the Times praised her performance, writing "the exquisite, vivacious soprano Danielle de Niese nearly stole the show."
Debuting at the Met at the tender age of 19 as Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro, these performances will no doubt cement her top contender status to the likes of Anna Netrebko and Diana Damrau.
The Enchanted Island premieres February 26 and runs until March 20. Purchase your tickets here.
Mozart's Cosi fan tutte opens April 23, running to May 8. Tickets for that stint may be purchased here.
Trust us, you'll not want to miss either one.
