Carnegie Hall will showcase South Korean pianist Minsoo Sohn on Saturday, Oct. 6 in Zankel Hall at 7:30 p.m., on a day that will see four classical music performances at the historic New York venue.
Minsoo Sohn will perform Webern's Variations. "Op .27," followed by Johann Brahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, "Op.24." Sohn will then conclude proceedings at Carnegie Hall with Bach "Golberg's Variations BMV 988."
A piece that the New York Times once described as "beautifully articulated, radiant interpretation" and named it one of the top classical music recordings of 2011 when performed by the South Korean.
Sohn began playing the piano at three years old. He moved to Boston to study under the tutelage of Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun at the New England Conservatory and is now on the faculty of Michigan State University.
Sohn has played with the likes of Gilbert Varga, Keith Lockhart and the Philadelphia Orchestra's Yannick Nezet Seguin.
After a recent performance the Toronto Star said. "Sohn rose to each challenge with mesmerizing clarity of purpose, shaping quiet passages with the greatest of care, while never becoming strident when the music called for grand gestures."
To go along with Minsoo Sohnon the night will be Kent's Sangster's Obsessions Octet, they will be slated to perform at 8 p.m. in the Weill Recital Hall. In the Stern Auditorium/ Perelman Stage a USA-Japan Goodwill Concert will be held at the same time, while fans can also see a performance from students of the AFAF as will hold a recital early in the day at 1 p.m.
