Otello Met Opera 2012

The Metropolitan Opera House will being holding performances of Giuseppe Verdi's "Otello," starting Tuesday, Oct.9 2012 until the March 30, 2013.

Heading up this production is Elijah Moshinsky and he will be aided by the conducting skills of Russian Semyon Bychkov who is coming off of a performance at the Juilliard School with the in house orchestra and talent as well as the talents of Alain Altinoglu in the latter half of the plays viewing.

For the earlier showing of the piece Moshinsky has employed the services of South African tenor Johan Botha, he will play as the centerpiece of the show "Otello."

Renee Fleming will play as "Desdemona," across from her will be "Iago," played by Falk Struckman and the character "Cassio," will be played by American tenor Michael Fabiano.

From March 11 the staging of "Otello," will see wholesale changes as Moshinsky will usher in a new cast, starting with "Otello," who will be played by Jose Cura.

"Desdemona," will be played by Bulgarian Krassimira Stoyanova. The role of "Iago," will be attributed to Thomas Hampson while Alexey Dolgov will take part as "Cassio,"

Minus the actors and conductor Moshinsky will keep the same production team enact for the duration of Otello at the opera house. The set designer is Michael Yeargan. Peter J. Hall is the costume designer while Duane Schuler will be the lighting designer. Eleanor Fazan is the choreographer of the piece while fight scenes will be handled by B.H. Barry, the fight director.

For those unaccustomed to "Otello," it is a Giuseppe Verdi opera set in 15th century Cyprus.

"Otello," is a Venetian general who is in charge of defending his homeland, Cyprus against the southern pressing Turks. His marriage to the beautiful "Desdemona," won him an enemy namely a wealthy man called "Rodrigo." Desdemona suitor hatches a plan with "Iago," one of "Otello's" men to break the union and confesses that he hates "Otello" because he promoted "Cassio," to a higher rank instead of him.

"Otello," is a four act play and will be approximately three hours at the Manhattan venue.
