American treasure Bob Costas' eyes must be no better after nearly a week of recuperation, because Today show diva Matt Lauer is going to be replacing him as prime time anchor yet again tonight, during NBC's evening Sochi Winter Olympics coverage. No doubt he is looking for anything to take his mind off the fears of the impending Ann Curry movie backlash.
Matt Lauer gets to cover the Winter Olympics in Sochi for NBC during primetime for yet another night, while Bob Costas is regrettably out due to an infection of some sort.
Bob told Ryan Seacrest in a radio interview that he was hoping to back at the anchor's desk by before the close of the weekend but that is definitely not going to be able to happen.
Last Friday NBC's Olympics EP Jim Bell mentioned that the network wouldn't consider replacing Costas until the new week, which starts tomorrow (via Deadline):
"Getting into next week, it may become a topic of conversation, but we're not there."
Costas loss is Lauer's gain. The morning show anchor is probably hoping to engender as much good will as he can his American audience, before the film entailing his diva like sensibilities is released later this year.
Lauer is reportedly driving co-workers crazy with his backlash paranoia around the office (via In Touch):
"Matt is so nervous and has been asking everyone if they've seen the script yet. The book depicts everything that happened back then, and Matt is worried that he's going to be painted as the villain."
And Matt isn't just afraid of how his behavior will look, he is worried about how the actor playing him will literally look according to a source in In Touch:
"He's also obsessed with who's going to play him in the movie. It's definitely going to play up Ann as the victim and the hero. She's finally getting her revenge."
Oh well...he will always have Sochi.
