HBO ‘True Detective’ Cast Recap: Woody Harrelson Takes Mushrooms, Mathew McConaughey ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ Regains Weight

HBO's new series True Detective is more than half-way through its first and only season to feature acting heavyweights Woody Harrelson and Mathew McConaughey in the cast, which is a shame, because they are both good in it. McConaughey is still regaining the weight he lost from his acting tour de force, Dallas Buyers Club. And Ted Danson recently recalled taking psychedelic mushrooms with Cheers alum Woody on Conan.

Woody Harrelson is not one to just say no, especially in his youth, but you might not have known that sometimes he and Ted Danson would go on psilocybin trips with the rest of the cast.

But that is exactly what happened one day, when the cast decided to play hookie on "Clif's" boat.

Ted Danson recently recounted the harrowing tale on Conan while promoting his current network series CSI (via Death and Texas):

"We decided to play hookie [from the set of Cheers], so all the boys got on John Ratzenberger's boat ... and I think we actually did 'light up.' [When] Woody says 'have you ever tried mushrooms?'...I'm not responsible for anything today, how wonderful. I ate way more than my share, and for the next three hours I died. [George Wendt] would look at me and go breathe. He would say it, like, 60 times."

Mathew McConaughey recently opened up in an interview about just how difficult it's been to recover from the stress of losing 50 pounds to play a terminal AIDS patient in Dallas Buyers Club (via Contact Music):

"I talked with two nutritionists, did my research, found out what not to do. And then I just committed to it and I had the support of my family and my wife and I ate controlled meals. I'm a runner in real life and that particular scene, I hadn't exercised in four months and I stretched because it was a short run but I knew I had to run', he reveals. "I made it 20 feet and my thighs just locked up and my legs buckled and I went down."

True Detective airs on HBO at 9 p.m. on Sundays.
