This has been a historic month for LGBT equality awareness, though it is supposed to be about black history. Canadian actress of Juno and Inception fame, Ellen Page, announced that she was gay in Las Vegas yesterday. Her announcement comes hot on the heels of NFL draft favorite Michael Sam coming out.
Missouri defensive lineman Michael Sam announced last week that whoever drafts him this May will be getting the NFL's first openly gay player (via ESPN):
"I understand how big this is. It's a big deal. No one has done this before. And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be ... I want to be a football player in the NFL.
"I didn't realize how many people actually knew, and I was afraid that someone would tell or leak something out about me. I want to own my truth. ... No one else should tell my story but me."
26-year-old Canadian nymph Ellen Page, perhaps inspired by Sam's courage, also chose this month to come out as gay in a very public fashion.
Page mentioned Sam in her inspiring speech to a crowd at an event called Time to THRIVE in Vegas (via CNN):
"I'm here today because I am gay. And because... maybe I can make a difference... I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years, because I was scared to be out.
"We deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame and without compromise"
We at Offbeat would like to congratulate Ellen and Michael for having the courage to live their lives openly and by their own convictions.
