It was an absolute heartbreak, indeed, to hear that New York City Opera closed its doors to the public after 70 years of service.
No, not even a rich benefactor could've saved the imploding company.
But now, Plácido Domingo--a true superstar who made his New York debut with NYCO--has agreed to sing at the 70th anniversary benefit concert to honor the company's founding.
Mr. Domingo joins other veterans of the troupe, its orchestra and its chorus at a concert called "70 Years of the People's Opera," which premieres on February 21 at City Center.
Ticket prices vary greatly (from $25 to $250, in fact) and are available at the City Center's website.
"The company has done extraordinary work for these many decades, and has played an indispensable role in the cultural life of New York City," Domingo said.
"This concert is a reminder of the enduring passion of the City Opera family for the living art form of opera--and of the artistic vitality of the musicians and performers who carry on the 'people's opera's' ambitious populist tradition."
With Mr. Domingo's participation, the anniversary concert should draw some serious attendance.
The gala will also benefit the New York City Musicians' Emergency Relief Fund, a safety net program started by Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians.
A Little Night Music, then? You betcha!
