Carnegie Hall has opens its doors to the foreign talent that is the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain on Wednesday, Oct.17 at 8 p.m. in the Stern Auditorium/ Perelman Stage.
The Ukulele Orchestra will be at Carnegie for just this one night. An act that the New York Times calls, "sheer fun and daffiness."
The eight member group comprised of Dave Suich, Peter Brooke-Turner, Hester Goodman, George Hinchliffe, Richie Williams, Kitty Lux, Will Grove-White and Jonty Bankes formed in 1985.
When speaking about the formation of the group co-founder George Hinchcliffe said.
"The humour only came in during the first gig, when we played in two keys by accident and were messing around, with the sheet music falling everywhere. I thought we should go with it," according to The Independent.
There act consists of playing the Hawaiian instrument with a repertoire consisting ranging from Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," from the play Swan Lake to Kate's Bush's "Wuthering Heights."
The octet has toured in North America numerous times, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, France, Austria, Sweden,Norway,Finland, Estonia, Ireland and their native Great Britain.
The orchestra has eight studio albums so far the last coming in 2008 entitled, "Christmas with the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain." Three live albums last of which "Still Live," in 2011 and two DVDs "Anarchy in the Ukulele," in 2005 and "Prom Night- Live at the Royal Albert Hall- BBC Proms 2009.
