American pianist Jonathan Biss and Swiss flutist Emmanuel Pahud have engaged the ever-expanding internet with web-based music teaching series, and now Ireland's own Sir James Galway will follow their URL suits.
On Friday, February 7 at the Music Expo at the Barbican, Galway released his online flute education program "First Flute," designed for beginners who don't have the luxury of or access to weekly lessons.
There are 15 lessons in total which start with, literally, pulling the flute from the box and ending with your very first "concert."
There is also supplementation for advanced players, who have the option of skipping the introductory portion to focus on other studies such as articulation and breathing.
There are several "Practice Room" sessions, too, comprising exercises played by Galway supplemented with printable sheet music.
If you're not totally freaked out by learning how to flaut online (speaking from experience, I've actually acquired the greater measure of my guitar fingering skills via online instruction), then give Galway's approach a shot.
And don't miss Galway's next appearance with his wife, Jeanne, at Cadogan Hall in London on May 10 at 7:30 p.m.
For your entertainment, here is a tele-video of Sir James Galway performing his suite from Lord of the Rings.
